NURS 724 Primary Care IV: Geriatric and Complex Care

This course focuses on developing advanced skills in primary care management of adult and older adult clients with complex, multi-system illnesses. Etiology, clinical presentation, differential diagnoses, disease management issues, genetics and ongoing health promotion/disease prevention will be addressed utilizing an evidence-based framework for providing complex care based in systems biology, healthy aging theory, and advanced practice nursing theory. Health disparities based in racism, ethnicity, poverty, and structural violence, their effects on physical and mental health, and the DNP prepared family nurse practitioners' responsibility to combat these disparities will be addressed.

General

  • Analyze needs related to health promotion for adult and older adult clients with complex multi-system illnesses.
  • Evaluate laboratory and diagnostic studies related to acute, chronic, and multi-system illnesses common in adults and older adults.
  • Utilize evidenced based principles in the differential diagnosis and management of multi-system illnesses common in adults and older adults.
  • Provide holistic primary care for adults and older adults with complex illness that is based on knowledge of etiology, clinical findings, differential diagnosis, and nursing theory.
  • Engage in advocacy for underserved populations based on analysis of the bio-psycho-social-historical-political basis for health disparities and the DNP role in developing a socially just healthcare system.
  • Synthesize and present different perspectives on an issue affecting underserved populations and identify a social determinant of health with potential solution(s) to address the issue.
  • Application of current knowledge of genetics, genomics, and pharmacogenomics to differential diagnosis, risk assessment, and individualized treatment planning.
