Picture of a clack and white American flag, with an image of a person in historical striped prisoner clothing with its stripes lining up with the flag's, giving the impression that the prisoner is stepping out of the flag.

The Understanding and Responding to Mass Incarceration (URMI) 2026 Conference is hosting a pre-conference screening of the award-winning documentary, 13th, directed by Ava DuVernay.

13th is a 2016 American documentary film that explores the prison–industrial complex and the intersection of race, justice, and mass incarceration in the United States. The title refers to the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, adopted in 1865, which abolished slavery throughout the country and ended involuntary servitude ... except as punishment for convicted criminals. The film argues that this exemption has been used to continue the practice of involuntary servitude in the form of prison labor.

This film screening is free and open to the public. While it is being organized in connection with the URMI Conference on April 10 with a topic that ties directly to this year's URMI theme, registering for URMI is not a prerequisite to attending this film screening.
