NURS 306 Essential Concepts of Pharmacology I

This course introduces the student to essential concepts of nursing management of drug therapy across the lifespan. Students will be introduced to pharmacologic concepts that are the foundation of providing safe and effective pharmacologic management the care of diverse clients.

Prerequisite: Admitted to EL-MSN program. Co-Requisites: NURS 304 and NURS 325.

Learning outcomes

General

  • Describe basic principles of pharmacology including pharmacotherapeutics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, mechanism of action, therapeutic effect, adverse effect, drug/drug and other interactions, drug classification system, and prototype drug.
  • Discuss the nursing implications for administration, monitoring, and patient education for select drug categories.
  • Describe major classifications and actions of selected drugs used in health promotion, disease prevention, and/or diseases treatment across the lifespan.
  • Discuss drug development, significances of scheduling of drugs, and federal control of drugs.
