Metro State Cyber Clinic hosted an Neighborhood Development Center workshop, “Stay One Step Ahead: Spot, Block, and Defend Against Cyber Threats,” drawing 12 small businesses and nonprofits for hands-on cyber hygiene training on September 24. The session focused on helping leaders recognize phishing and social-engineering attempts, implement high-impact safeguards (multi-factor authentication, timely updates, secure backups, and strong passwords), and prepare a simple incident-response checklist to speed recovery after an attack.
“Small businesses and nonprofits often don’t have the same resources as large enterprises to dedicate to cybersecurity, which is exactly why they are targeted more frequently,” said Dr. Mousumi Munmun, faculty director of the Cyber Clinic. “Our mission is to close that gap by equipping community leaders with simple, affordable, and actionable steps they can take right now. Through our training, we want to empower organizations that are most vulnerable to cyberattacks to strengthen their defenses without straining their limited budgets.” Attendees left with a quick-start cyber hygiene checklist and information on follow-up support and free risk-assessment opportunities through the Cyber Clinic.
