Communication skills are consistently among the most sought-after skills by employers across industries. The Department of Communication prepares students to meet that demand with both technical expertise and ethical practice. They become innovative communicators who design information thoughtfully and strengthen communication in communities and organizations. Rooted in Metro State University’s commitment to anti-racist education and community engagement, we approach communication as both a social force that shapes public life and a set of practices for creating more just, accessible, and effective systems of information.
Curriculum
Our curriculum combines oral communication, writing, research, game and information design, and media literacy, helping students navigate complex information and communicate with diverse audiences. Through hands-on, project-based learning, students translate specialized content, develop strategic communication, and go on to careers in business, healthcare, technology, nonprofits, government, and creative industries.
Our graduate programs in technical communication extend this work through advanced study in user experience, content strategy, and professional writing. Students apply research methods, usability testing, and iterative design to produce portfolio-ready deliverables such as accessible documents, information architectures, and digital interfaces. Graduates work across the tech industry, healthcare, government, and community-based organizations, using communication to improve systems and everyday experiences.
Programs
We prepare students to become strategic communicators who not only understand how communication shapes the world, but who actively design it to be more equitable, accessible, and responsive to the communities they serve. We offer programs in professional, strategic, technical, and media-focused communication to prepare students to serve people, communities, and organizations.
