ARTS 450 Curatorial Practices

This is an art history, upper-division course on curatorial practice today. The class will include hands-on experiences with exhibition installations at the Gordon Parks Gallery, combined with learning about contemporary topics in museums and galleries. Students will critically examine diverse curatorial practices and consider how the roles of museums, galleries, curators, and artists are evolving to be relevant and community-facing. Students will get the opportunity to work directly with professional artists and curators in the community.

  • Evaluate problem solving strategies for exhibiting a variety of artworks using professional curatorial techniques and implement as needed.
  • Assess art historical tropes in curatorial practice and exhibition design.
  • Argue the importance of ideas in curating today, including accessibility, community engagement, decolonization, and new technologies.
  • Demonstrate skills in art handling, gallery preparation, creating didactics, and developing PR
  • Construct and prepare exhibitions and programing with professional artists in the community.
  • Critically compare and contrast a variety of exhibition spaces.
