Competent, professional dental treatment requiring in-depth understanding of comprehensive management of patient-centered dental problems within the scope of advanced dental therapy practice is the focus of this course. This practicum and seminar based course offers in-depth advanced dental therapy experiences providing primary and preventive oral health care services to underserved patient populations. Emphasis is placed on providing primary and preventive oral health care dental services under the guidance of a preceptor.

General

  • Provide, administer, and dispense medications appropriate to dental therapy/advanced dental therapy practice and patients dental need(s) while under supervision of a dentist.
  • Recognize physical and mental health conditions that can affect the delivery of oral healthcare and modify treatment to achieve successful outcomes.
  • Recognize signs of domestic violence, patient abuse or neglect and make appropriate reports and referrals
  • Self-evaluate the dental therapy/advanced dental therapy care provided to special needs patients.
  • Understand and prevent barriers that may affect the special needs patient accessing oral health care provided by dental therapists/advanced dental therapists.
  • Deliver and manage comprehensive oral health care within the dental therapy/advanced dental therapy scope of practice and by appropriate referrals to collaborative management dentists and other professionals.
  • Demonstrate compassion and respect in all communication with patients.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and ethical judgment and behavior while providing patient care and associated activities.
  • Demonstrate willingness for self-improvement of dental therapy/advanced dental therapy care provided to special needs patients.
  • Gather data; analyze and assess the data, determine a prognosis and treatment plan, specific to the patient's needs with authorization from a collaborative management agreement dentist.
  • Identify and implement modifications to treatment planning and delivery of oral healthcare that may be necessary special needs patient.
  • Identify and manage preventive oral health strategies and procedures for special needs patients.
  • Maintain accurate, ethical and legal records of all patient encounters.
  • Partner with special needs patients and caregivers to enhance informed decision-making and the delivery of oral healthcare.
  • Prevent, identify and manage dental emergencies.
  • Prevent, identify, and provide initial treatment and management for medical emergencies that may occur in the dental setting.
  • Provide dental therapy/advanced dental therapy oral healthcare in a culturally competent manner.
