NURS 334 Perinatal Nursing Care

This course explores evidence based, holistic, person and family centered nursing care of mothers, newborns, and birthing families. Emphasis will be placed on health promotion, illness prevention and management of alterations of health and wellness in a variety of healthcare settings. The role of the professional nurse as a member of the interdisciplinary team is investigated as students learn to utilize clinical judgment to promote and maintain the health of perinatal population. This course is part of a competency based nursing curriculum leading to the baccalaureate of science degree in nursing.

  • Apply Modeling and Role Modeling nursing theory and developmental frameworks to provide safe, effective, evidence based, holistic, care for the perinatal population.
  • Utilize effective professional and therapeutic communication techniques with interprofessional teams and client families to provide care for the perinatal population.
  • Discuss the role of the nurse within the interprofessional team to manage the holistic nursing care of mother, newborn and families.
  • Discuss adaptations to a holistic health assessment and focused health assessment for the perinatal (mother and newborn) clients.
  • Compare strategies to reduce risk factors and strengthen protective factors in the perinatal population.
  • Plan evidence based, ethical nursing care consistent with professional nursing standards.
  • Explain the legal and ethical concepts that guide the nursing care of mothers, newborns and families.
