NURS 336 Nursing Care of Children

This course explores evidence based, holistic, person and family centered nursing care of children and their families. Emphasis will be placed on health promotion, illness prevention, and management of alterations of health and wellness in a variety of healthcare settings. The role of the professional nurse as a member of the interdisciplinary team is investigated as students learn to utilize clinical judgment to promote and maintain the health of children and their families. This course is part of a competency based nursing curriculum leading to the baccalaureate of science degree in nursing.

General

  • Apply Modeling and Role-Modeling nursing theory, nursing process, clinical judgment, prioritization, and developmental frameworks to provide safe, effective, evidence based, holistic, care for the pediatric population.
  • Utilize effective professional communication to develop a therapeutic relationship with client and within interprofessional teams to provide care for pediatric populations.
  • Discuss the role of the nurse within the interprofessional team to manage the holistic nursing care of children and families.
  • Identify equitable and inclusive care across the pediatric populations to include racial disparity, gender bias, stigma, structural racism, and poverty in healthcare.
  • Discuss adaptations to a holistic health assessment (to include social determinants of health) and focused health assessment for the pediatric client.
  • Evaluate evidence based nursing interventions and identify ethical and legal implications for care of minors that is consistent with professional nursing standards.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of developmental care across the family care continuum to promote safety and reduce harm in the pediatric population.
