Major job duties

Science Lab Student Assistant I job duties:

  • Prepare and put away laboratory supplies and equipment for all science courses.
  • Calculate supply needs of laboratory experiments dependent on student numbers.
  • Prepare chemical solutions, including using hazardous materials.
  • Manage laboratory glassware.
  • Multitask as required in coordination with lab team.
  • Prepare culture media and reagents using aseptic technique according to standard protocols.
  • Track and organize maintenance and calibration of equipment.

Oversee additional sections of undergraduate laboratories in absence of regular staff when offered.

  • Explain laboratory procedures to others
  • Enforce proper laboratory safety conduct
  • React quickly in emergency situations.

Additional advanced lab assistant duties may include:

  • Provide direction and demonstrate tasks to other science lab student assistants
  • Diagnosing and fixing basic lab equipment
  • Tests new or changes to lab procedures
  • Assist faculty and staff with research and other projects

Qualifications and experience

  • Completion of relevant Biology, Physics or Chemistry courses with a minimum grade of B+.
  • Aptitude for helping fellow students understand content, develop ability, and gain confidence.
  • Attention to detail and careful record keeping.
  • Student must commit to completing entire academic semester.
