DENH 630 Management of Medical Emergencies
This didactic and simulation laboratory based course reviews common medical and dental emergencies that may be seen in the dental setting, as well as, management protocols and prevention strategies for emergencies. This course illustrates the relationship between accurate data collection and achieving successful outcomes in the management of dental and medical emergencies. Emphasis is placed on gathering, analyzing and processing information to develop appropriate action plans. Simulation laboratory experiences of medical emergencies take place in a dental operatory.

Learning outcomes
General
- Accurately collect, review, revise and document comprehensive health history information.
- Accurately complete problem focused oral assessments and diagnostic testing.
- Appropriately sequence and position dental emergency services in an overall treatment plan.
- Assess the urgency of oral health care needs and prioritize treatment.
- Assess, formulate prognosis and individualized care plan based on data, standards of care and scope of practice for an Advanced Dental Therapist.
- Determine when referral to other healthcare providers is indicated and make referrals as indicated.
- Recognize the need for, develop and implement treatment modifications required for patients with special dental access needs.
- Utilize effective communication skills and demonstrate cultural competence during patient interviews.
- Discuss proper post-operative instructions with patient and/or care giver.
- Dispense and administer analgesics, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics, when indicated.
- Identify and prevent medical emergencies in the dental setting.
- Perform proper emergency medical procedures in the simulation laboratory.
- Recognize and describe proper handling of post-operative complications, where applicable.
