This course is the first information technology foundation course in the College of Management. It focuses on the technology literacy, managerial and business problem solving dimensions of computer based information systems. It provides students with an introduction to the fundamental terminology of the hardware, software and the people involved with computer based information systems. The course includes hands on computer lab time to introduce students to word processing, database, spread sheet, and Internet microcomputer applications. This course is designed specifically to prepare students for information technology competence as needed in College of Management courses.

Special information

Note: Microsoft Office 2019, or Microsoft Office 365, is required for this course. The software is available on computers in the library and installed in all campus labs for student use.

  • Students will be able to show competence in understanding the Components of the System Unit.
  • Students will be able to show competence in understanding the Internet and World Wide Web.
  • Students will be able to show competence in understanding Communications and Networks.
  • Students will be able to show competence in understanding Input and Output devices and their application.
  • Students will be able to show competence in understanding Operating Systems and Utility Programs.
  • Students will be able to show competence in understanding storage, both primary and secondary.
  • Students will be able to show competence in understanding Computer Security and Safety, Ethics, and Privacy.
  • Students will be able to show competence in understanding Database Management concepts.
  • Students will be able to show competence in understanding basic concepts in Enterprise Computing.
  • Students will be able to show competence in understanding Information System Development and Programming Languages.
  • Students will also be able to use conditional formatting, import data from an external site and manipulate the data.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate the use of formulas functions and formatting, and what if analysis to create a mortgage table and use pivot tables to manipulate data.
  • Students will be able to use a Template to Create a Resume and Share a Finished Document.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to apply primary and foreign keys and understand simple relationship between tables.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to create a Document with a Title Page, use Lists, Tables, and a Watermark.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to create reports and forms.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to use Financial Functions, Data Tables, and Amortization Schedules, work with Multiple Worksheets and Workbooks, create Templates, Importing Data.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to use Microsoft Access to create, edit, save, query and format tables.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to use Microsoft Excel to create, edit, save and format spreadsheets and create and embed charts.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to use Microsoft Word to create, edit, save and format documents including documents with graphics.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to use the review functions and properly cite research papers; create a web page and a resume.
