WRIT 112 The Educated Reader: College Reading

This course is intended for students wanting to become more proficient college readers. Readings address a number of current topics from multiple perspectives. Students are exposed to materials in areas such as the social and natural sciences, business, and literature. The course emphasizes the importance of reading analytically and interacting effectively with visual information. In order to enhance their reading comprehension, students engage in ongoing communication about lengthy readings through small group discussion, in-class exercises, written assignments and periodic oral presentations. Some library work is included.

Special information

Prerequisite: Students with an Accuplacer Reading Comprehension Score lower than 78 may not be prepared to succeed in this class. Contact the instructor if you have any questions about your readiness. Note: RDNG 112 may be used as a general education elective.

As a team member, to plan, research and develop a portion of a topic so the small group can collectively organize and synthesize results before making a coherent oral group presentation.
To attend to specific words in readings in order to more accurately comprehend and appreciate written materials and to expand receptive and expressive vocabulary.
To comprehend and successfully apply principles of logical, clear writing to the creation of original essays based on topics researched for oral presentations.
To comprehend diverse current event topics well enough to share insights about facts, bias and different view points.
To comprehend written material in a variety of disciplines in order to widely apply analytical and critical thinking skills.
