NURS 424 Public Health Nursing

This course expounds on the history, theory, and practice of population based public health nursing. A holistic public health nursing framework that supports the three levels of public health nursing practice is introduced. A socio ecological health determinants model is utilized for the assessment of risk and protective factors across the lifespan to determine health status and health inequities. Epidemiological, environmental health and intersectionality theory are explored to analyze current and emerging population health concerns across the lifespan. Cultural humility, social justice, advocacy, and health disparities are threaded throughout the course. Health information technology used in public health nursing is explored. This course meets the theory requirements for BSN graduates to apply for licensure as a Public Health Nurse in the state of Minnesota. This course is part of a competency based nursing curriculum leading to the baccalaureate of science degree in nursing.

  • Examine the holistic public health nursing framework and public health intervention wheel for health promotion and disease prevention when working with diverse populations.
  • Apply basic principles of epidemiology and environmental health in the collection and analysis of determinants of health data to identify health status, trends, and inequities.
  • Analyze public health strategies to advocate for social justice with both public and private sectors to address the Social Determinants of Health, structural racism, and systemic inequities.
  • Compare the three levels of independent public health nursing practice.
  • Utilize the evidence-based practice triad to evaluate best practices in PHN leadership, teamwork, community engagement, and interventions in working with individuals, families, communities, and systems.
  • Identify population health trends and priorities and key intervention strategies.
  • Explain the role of informatics in PHN.
