TCID 396 Publishing and Selling Your Game

This production-focused course explores aspects of publishing, marketing, and sales that are crucial or unique to successful video and tabletop game launches. Topics covered include game-related marketing strategies such as: community building, crowdfunding, basic social media marketing, game pitches, gaming for good, indie studios, game journalism/ethics, review copy protocol, live game events, player sponsorship, and Twitch. Group work is a major part of this course, though exceptions can be given.

Prerequisites: WRIT 131 AND WRIT 231 or Writing requirement fulfilled.

Learning outcomes

General

  • Students will be able utilize effective game promotion strategies such as pitches, crowdfunding, using influencers, cross-promotional marketing, and game genre conventions.
  • Students will be able to write effective copy for publishing and selling a game through assignments such as press releases, understanding your audience, blogging, finding a hook, and ethics.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate steps to forming an indie game studio through assignments such as creating budgets, the basics of creating marketing plans, branding, valuing diversity in your game and workplace, and community development.
