Metro State understands that unexpected financial challenges can create significant stress while students work toward their academic goals. Limited funding is available to assist students experiencing a basic-needs emergency that may jeopardize their ability to remain enrolled and successfully complete their studies.
Emergency grants are intended for unforeseen financial situations and are not available for tuition, books, fees, credit card bills, or routine vehicle maintenance (such as tires, brakes, or oil changes). Eligible students may receive a one-time emergency grant of up to $500. Award amounts are determined based on each student's unique circumstances and the supporting documentation provided. Funding sources are determined by the university according to established eligibility criteria. To determine if you are eligible to apply, contact the coordinator.
Emergency grants
- The SAFE Emergency Assistance Grant: this grant is limited in funding and will only consider requests for unforeseen emergency situations related to a student's basic needs. Students can only receive this grant on a one-time basis. To be considered, students must be experiencing an unforeseen financial emergency related to their basic needs, be enrolled and taking courses, and be able to provide third-party documentation of the need.
- The Random Act of Kindness Grant: this grant is limited in funding and will consider a basic need-related emergency that does not involve a recurring expense.
- McCabe Emergency Grant for Veteran and Military Students: this emergency grant is only available to veteran and military students who may be facing an emergency related to their basic needs.
Emergency loans
- The Phillips Loan: students who are not eligible or have been denied emergency funding can request to apply for a Phillips loan in order to cover an urgent basic-need related emergency. The loan does have a small fee and is due to be repaid by the end of the semester. For more information or to apply, contact Gateway Services.
