Metropolitan State mourns loss in university family

Posted March 20, 2017

To the Metropolitan State Community:

It is with sadness that I share the news of the passing of Arleene Pachl Sweet, the wife of our founding president, David Sweet, and long-time friend of the University. Arleene died on Thursday, March 16.

Arleene Sweet was an enthusiastic supporter of Metropolitan State since our University was created.

She often visited campus for events and was a great friend to many colleagues, past and present, who cherished her warm and caring presence. It was Arleene who designed the medallion that is worn by our Provost at all commencement ceremonies.

Arleene was a native of Missouri. She and David were married in 1954 and had two children. Following David’s term as President of Metropolitan State, they moved to Providence, RI, where David served as President of Rhode Island College. Following David’s death, Arleene returned to Minnesota.

Full obituary notices are planned for Wednesday, March 22, in the Star Tribune and Pioneer Press. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m., Thursday, March 23, at Presbyterian Church of the Way, 3382 Lexington Ave N, Shoreview, MN , with one hour of gathering before. To honor Arleene’s love of the University, the family has requested that memorial gifts be sent to our Foundation.

Sincerely,

President Virginia "Ginny" Arthur, JD
