Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how work gets done across industries—from automating routine tasks to supporting smarter, faster decision-making. The Applied AI for Business microcredential at Metro State is designed for professionals, career-changers, and students who want to understand how AI is used in the workplace and how to apply it effectively and responsibly in real-world business settings. No advanced technical background is required.

This 6-credit microcredential focuses on practical, hands-on applications of AI rather than programming or theory alone. Learners explore how organizations use AI tools to improve business processes, analyze data, enhance customer experiences, and support strategic decisions. Through applied examples and workplace-relevant activities, participants gain the confidence to evaluate AI solutions, communicate effectively with technical teams, and identify opportunities where AI can add value within their own roles or organizations.

Required Course (4 credits)

Artificial Intelligence (AI) involves the simulation of human intelligence in machines, enabling them to think, learn, and make decisions. This course offers a comprehensive exploration of AI technologies and their applications in business. Students will examine the five primary types of AI used in business information management, with a focus on their practical applications in core business functions such as marketing, finance, and customer service. Through hands-on projects, students will engage with functional, interactive, and analytical AI tools to solve real-world business challenges. No prior programming experience is required.

This course is designed to define the role of Knowledge Management (KM) in organizations, various components needed to manage knowledge in an organization, leadership skills required to lead a KM initiative, evaluation of existing KM tools and systems, the difference between KM and data management, content management, and information retrieval. It gives special attention to management information systems theories in the organizational setting including: transaction processing, operational reporting, decision support systems and executive information systems. It emphasizes the human aspects of change management, training and implementation with some attention to the role analytics plays to support decisions. The course includes case analysis from texts and real world examples.

This course introduces how analytics and Data Mining tools can be used to solve business problems like Best Next Offer, Customer Retention, Customer Potential Life Time Value estimation, Market Basket analysis, etc. This course gives students an opportunity to exercise advanced Data Exploration and Mining software. Introduction to Data Mining tools/solutions evaluation is also part of this course.
