EDU 454 The Urban ESL Professional

This course examines the roles and responsibilities of the urban ESL teacher. Students will develop the ability to communicate successfully with English learners in grades K-12, their parents, colleagues, and urban community members. Other topics include bilingualism, multilingualism, resources for continual professional development, classroom management, and working effectively with colleagues and the community to support student learning.

Prerequisites

EDU 200: Introduction to Urban Education and Reflective Teaching and EDU 203: Multicultural Education and EDU 452: Theories and Methods of Language Learning and EDU 453: Assessment and Curriculum for English Learners in Urban Schools and LING 316: The Nature of Language

Note: Admission to Urban Teacher Program is required to register. EDU 454 is offered concurrently with EDU 654.

General

Demonstrate the ability to communicate successfully with English learners in grades K-12, their parents, colleagues, and community members.
Understand that cultural practices may differ and that these differences may affect the way students learn.
Analyze issues of bilingualism and multilingualism.
Understand the notion of schools as organizations within the larger community context and that successful communication with English learners parents must be undertaken within that larger socio-cultural framework.
Learn how the student's environment, including family circumstances, community systems, and health and economic conditions, may influence learning.
Work with other professionals to improve the quality of educational services provided to students with limited English proficiency.
Plan how to involve representatives of business, industry, and community organizations as active partners in creating educational opportunities.
Contrast the purpose of co-curricular and extracurricular activities in the learning process.
