PSYC 354 Young Children in the Digital Age

In this course, students analyze the impact of technology in the digital age on the development of young children from birth to age eight. Brain development and cognitive processes are examined including attention, information processing, and learning. Students study the effects of technology on children¿s overall health and well-being including language, physical movement, emotional regulation, social relationships, imagination, and play. The benefits and risks of using technology are evaluated and students create a media plan to safely guide and monitor young children¿s use of technology. The course also includes examples of developmentally appropriate and adaptive tools and resources.

Learning outcomes

General

  • Analyze the impact of modern technology on the domains of young children¿s development including physical, cognitive, language, and social-emotional.
  • Critique alternative theories as related to modern technology and its impact on development in early childhood.
  • Evaluate the benefits (e.g., enhance learning, creativity, and access to information) and risks (e.g., excessive screen time, online safety, privacy concerns, social isolation) of using technology with young children.
  • Describe developmentally appropriate and adaptive tools and resources for young children.
  • Create a media plan to safely guide and monitor young children¿s use of technology.
